Hi folks! Today’s post is about my latest artwork re-work for my Metalhead series, titled The Adventure Begins!
This scene is where Metalhead is leaving the safety of their tiny house (of course this was drawn before tiny houses were a thing). My intention for the re-work this round was to balance out the composition, enhance shapes to be more distinctive, touching up the colour and as well as removing excessive details from my old linework.
I currently felt that the linework I was using back then had no intention to distinguish the foreground and background linework, in a sense that I was solely using one colour through the artwork - this in turn created a clutter to certain areas of the artwork that I ended up dissatisfied with and can also be distracting to the eye.
Colour was also something I had to work through in this artwork, where I was using quite a bit of white in the artwork and it was making the artwork look more desaturated than intended.
And finally, to finish off the artwork by working in patterns and textures, a style that I currently enjoy working with! I’m relatively pleased with the end process of this piece - at least for now! It’s always very tempting to keep tweaking the artwork, but it is also important to distinguish between spending hours lost in ‘micro tweaking’ versus ‘necessary tweaking’.
On an end note, here’s a little peek into the Metalhead home world with one of my pre-vis sketch! When working on this scene, I was particularly decided about keeping a rounded element to the architecture of the house - sort of like a hobbit house, but more fitting for a bumbling robot. As you can see, Metalhead’s house also comes equipped with good wifi (jk), with a huge antenna sticking infront of the house.
I also imagined lots of rolling hills, torii-like (portals), and a mysterious signal that communicates with Metalhead. More of these secrets and sketches, in the subscriber section!
